PARKERSBURG -- The Wood County Commission approved a new logo for the county.
Tom Crooks of the Stonewall Group appeared before the commission on Thursday to present the designs for the new logo which he described as a "brand refresh for the county."
The county has been using the same seal/logo for over 100 years which is the state seal with the designations of Wood County placed on it, Crooks said.
"It has been awhile since there was a makeover," Crooks said. "Our goal has been to create a refreshed persona for the county and everything the county does for the citizens."
Crooks said that one of the most iconic sites in the county is the Wood County Courthouse and they used a stylized image of the building in the new logo.
"Its clean, its simple, its contemporary and yet it is traditional and classic," Crooks said, adding those are the type of logos ''that stand the test of time.''
Commissioner Robert Tebay said when you are coming into town from certain directions the courthouse usually catches a lot of attention.
"The courthouse stands above everything else," he said.
Crooks said the building is so iconic. He showed different versions of the logo with the date of the county's founding, 1798, as well as variations of "Wood County," "West Virginia or WV" and other linework around it.
The logo work could be utilized on shirts, coffee mugs, business cards, caps, lanyards, letterhead, signage, websites, vehicles and more.
Crooks showed the design on a number of items to show how it could be utilized.
"In many ways it was simple to come up with," he said. "It took us some time to get there. Simple is sometimes the hardest to develop.
"We are pleased with this and hope you will be too."
He also showed a "W" logo that could be utilized in a number of ways.
The commission unanimously approved the design and to make it the official county logo.
Crooks said they are still working on a new website for the county that will be more "user friendly." They will be unveiling that in the near future.
