PARKERSBURG -- The United Way Alliance of the Mid-Ohio Valley will hold its annual Day of Action today at numerous locations in the area.
Twenty-three teams of volunteers from organizations and civic groups will work at 18 sites. More than 275 volunteers are expected today.
Even residents not on a team can help, too, according to Stacy DeCicco, executive director of the United Way Alliance. Participants also get an official Day of Action T-shirt when they donate, she said.
"The community blood drives are a great way for folks to still come out and make a difference even if they are not on a team," DeCicco said.
In June, communities around the world join together to harness the volunteer spirit and improve the conditions where they live. United Way Day of Action is an invitation for people and organizations around the world to live united and take action to address challenges.
The local Day of Action wasn't held in 2020 because of the pandemic, but returned in June 2021.
Returning this year is the Battle of the Banks, DeCicco said.
Nine teams from local banks will compete against each other in a food packing event hosted with Mountaineer Food Bank. The packing competition will be held 1-3 p.m. at West Virginia University at Parkersburg in the multi-purpose room.
"We will be packing over $15,000 in food product that will ultimately make its way into the Mid-Ohio Valley," DeCicco said.
The United Way Alliance has hosted the annual service day since 2016.
"This is expected to be our largest event ever," DeCicco said.
The event sponsor for the third consecutive year is WVU Medicine Camden Clark Medical Center. The day will kick off with a breakfast at 8 a.m. hosted by the hospital on the North Tower Patio.
Volunteers will receive an event tee provided by WVU Medicine Camden Clark and swag bags with sunscreen, hand sanitizer and other items. Projects start at 9 a.m.
