Camp Hervida plans 100th birthday celebration in July

For the last 100 years, youths have visited Waterford to swim, do crafts and learn skills at Camp Hervida.

For the 100th anniversary, a celebration will be held July 2 and 3 to include activities, campfires and games for the whole family.

The big event Saturday night is a dinner catered by Cowboy Concessions. Tickets for the dinner must be purchased by June 18.

Adult meals are $15 each and consists of barbecue chicken, baked beans, coleslaw, macaroni salad, watermelon, cantaloupe, dessert and a drink.

The kids meal for those ages 8 and under will be catered by the Camp Hervida board. It can be purchased as an add-on with an adult meal for $5. The meal will consist of chicken nuggets, macaroni and cheese, fruit, dessert and a drink.

Maggie Webster, former programming 4-H camp director and current volunteer with the camp, said about 230 people can stay in the 20 cabins, which are available for rent the weekend of the celebration.

"The idea is to … 100 years of something is pretty significant, especially with this local camp that is run by volunteers. We pay cooks (for the summer camps) and maintenance people, but it's all volunteers, basically," Webster said.

All cabins have bunk beds and are divided among boys, girls and staff. Cabins with eight to 10 bunks per cabin rent for $75 each and those with 12 to 14 bunks rent for $100. People must be at least 25 years of age to rent a cabin.

Meals are $15 and must be reserved either on the website (camphervida.org) or by calling the OSU Extension Office (740-376-7431).

The campsite includes a swimming pool, volleyball court, basketball court, ball field, shooting range, horseshoe pits, recreation hall, craft hall and activity building. There are 130 acres of woodlands, 20 acres of open fields, hiking trails, intermittent creek, grindstone quarry, amphitheater, nature center and diorama, according to the camp's website.

Webster said there are five camps scheduled for 2022, including a junior camp, cloverbud camp, beginner camp, senior camp and day camp. Camp is open to all youth, not just those in 4-H, she said.

* Junior camp is for youth who have completed grades 3 through 6 and will be held June 27 through July 1.

* Cloverbud camp is for youth ages 5 to 8 who have completed kindergarten. This one-day camp will be held July 5.

* Beginner camp is for youth who have completed second grade through the age of 10. Camp will be held July 6 and 7.

* Senior camp is for youth who have completed grades 6 through 9. Camp will be held July 17-21.

* A day camp will be held July 22 for grades K through 9 at the Washington County Fairgrounds.
