Blennerhassett Island schedules historical lecture series

By Staff Reports 2 min read

PARKERSBURG -- A new summer monthly lecture series on Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park will offer more information about the island's inhabitants and history

One-hour special history topics tours will be held the third Saturday of each month this summer, beginning with the Blennerhassett Estate Garden and Grounds Tour from 12:45-1:45 p.m. May 21.

Participants of this May program will learn what gardens and other period buildings existed as part of the estate in 1806. The program begins with a first-person presentation by "Mr. Peter Taylor," the Blennerhassett English gardener. Details and features of the Pleasure Garden as well as the Kitchen Garden and the Orchard will be shared. A program handout along with garden rendering will be provided.

The cost is $5 for adults. Chairs under shade trees are provided at different tour sites. It is a rain or shine event but porches and pavilion are available if it rains.

Other Saturday History days and topics include:

* June 18: Children of the Blennerhassett Mansion (a parent/child program)

* July 16: Blennerhassett Mansion Foodways Special Tour

* Aug. 20: Reflections of Putnam Daughters during an Afternoon Tea.

"Island visitors can explore different aspects of the Blennerhassett family this summer," said Craig Pyles, Park Superintendent. "Our volunteer educators, Dick and Martha Hartley, have developed and will conduct these programs."

For more information about each program, check out the Event Calendar page on the Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park or Greater Parkersburg CVB websites. Tickets for Saturday History programs in June and July must be purchased at the Blennerhassett Museum of Regional History before getting on the boat. The tours begin immediately upon arrival on the island.
