Parkersburg Fishing Derby ready to tip scales for young anglers with $100 golden trout
PARKERSBURG — The 41st annual Parkersburg Fishing Derby will be held 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the City Park and Southwood Park ponds.
Hundreds of youthful anglers are expected to compete for prizes and the mother of all catches, the golden trout.
“They’ll get a $100 bill” for hooking a golden trout, said Andy Hartleben, a derby organizer and director of the sponsoring Wood County Recreation Commission.
The ponds will be stocked with fresh trout today, Hartleben said. One golden trout will be stocked in each pond, he said.
The fishing derby was created 41 years ago by Al Smith, who was the mayor of Parkersburg.
Kids from 3-14 years old line up along the shores and cast their line into the ponds. Prizes are awarded for the top three places based on the size of the trout, Hartleben said. Awards will be presented for the largest non-trout, too.
This year’s derby will be in honor of the late Matt Shively, who was an avid supporter of the derby, Holiday in the Park and youth sports, Hartleben said. Donations to the fishing derby were requested by the family in lieu of flowers, he said.
“This was a great thing to honor him,” Hartleben said.
