100 Women Who Care donates to Latrobe Street Mission

MARIETTA -- The 100 Women Who Care in the MOV group hosted its second quarterly meeting on Thursday, Jan. 20, at The Adelphia Music Hall in Marietta.

Formed in October 2021, the group brings local women together to support local nonprofit charities. At each meeting, each attendee pledges $100. Three local nonprofit organizations pitch their mission and needs to the group, then members vote. The organization with the most votes receives the donations.

Event fees are covered by sponsors. The group wishes to thank Elite Realty Group and The Adelphia Music Hall for generously sponsoring the winter meeting.

On Jan. 20, the group heard presentations from BrAva, the Parkersburg Humane Society and Latrobe Street Mission. Latrobe Street Mission, which provides emergency housing to the homeless population in Parkersburg, got the most votes and will receive more than $3,600. On the night of the event, the shelter was housing 70 people, including children.

The volunteer-run 100 Women group was founded by Jessica Huffman and board members Megan Thieman, Danielle Allphin and Angie Reich.

"Our group is inclusive and open to any local women that are looking for a way to give back to our wonderful community," Huffman said. "It only takes one hour of time to join per quarter and a commitment to donate $100, which is a little over a dollar a day for the quarter. As a busy working professional and mom myself, I want to help my community but have found it hard to find time to put in a lot of man hours. I've already learned a lot about local charities and the work they're doing. I would have never had this exposure without this group. We are also introducing many women through the networking opportunities at our events."

At the fall 2021 meeting, the inaugural winner of the group's donations was The Children's Listening Place. Children's Listening Place Executive Director Greg Collins donated $250 toward the winter winner to pass on the generosity his organization received at the fall meeting.
