PARKERSBURG -- Parkersburg South High School students and teachers can help make Christmas brighter for local children while enjoying a little friendly competition.
The sophomore class is conducting a collection drive for Toys for Tots through Friday, Dec. 17. The grade that donates the most new, unwrapped toys by then will get to enjoy a Christmas movie before the holiday break.
"We were looking for a community service project to do," sophomore class Secretary Olivia Raber said.
"We wanted something that would get the most participation," sophomore class Vice President Cate Evans added.
At first they considered a canned food drive, but another group was doing that. So they decided to help out Toys for Tots, the volunteer program which provides Christmas gifts for hundreds of families in need and multiple organizations in the area.
"We knew that would be something that would benefit some of our students and their families," Raber said.
The collection started Monday, and Raber went shopping over the weekend to get her contributions. She said she picked items for multiple ages and boys and girls.
"I got a lot of Barbies 'cause that's something I enjoyed," she said.
Students can put the toys in the box designated for their class, while teachers can choose whichever grade they want.
"Teachers can pick which class they would like to help out," Raber said.
