Weather dampens plans for Pioneer Days in Cairo

CAIRO -- The city of Cairo is working to bring back its Pioneer Days event, which has not been held in over 10 years.
While the area had hoped to get the ball rolling this year, the weather and other unforeseen circumstances all but shut down the plans for Saturday.
While the re-enactment was canceled due to heath concerns and the horse drawn carriage rides due to the small flurries of snow, cold weather and rain that threatened to turn icy; members of the surrounding communities did find a way to salvage part of the day.
People from Marietta, Wood and Ritchie counties brought out engines, tractors and old cars for people to come out and enjoy, and the Cairo Volunteer Fire Department cooked breakfast for the community.
"The weather didn't pan out, but (we're) happy with turnout so far," said Fire Chief Zach Foster.
Foster said that although it wasn't the history-filled day they had hoped for, there is always next year, and the community had all seemed very excited with the idea of starting up the event once more.
"With a full year to plan, we hope to have the live history, carriage rides and vendors back next year to join the engine and tractor show," he said.
