Paden City High School receives $50K from WVDE competition

PADEN CITY -- Paden City High School received $50,000 Friday for its efforts to encourage youth to vaccinate against the coronavirus.
The monetary award was through a competition of the West Virginia Department of Education, the I Got Vaxxed Competition to get the most students vaccinated against the virus as possible.
The presentation was made on Friday by Gov. Jim Justice and Babydog, his English bulldog that is the face of the Do It for Babydog vaccine sweepstakes.
Paden City High School plans to use the winnings to fund school-community opportunities, such as school dances, a family fun carnival and to expand learning opportunities.
Administrators at the high school presented Justice and Babydog with custom T-shirts designed by students that said "Paden City High School Did it for Babydog."
Many students also wore the shirt to Friday's ceremony.
Also receiving $50,000 through the competition on Friday was Grafton High School in Taylor County.
Grafton High will use the money to take their students on trips to experience cultural opportunities, such as Washington, D.C., or the Inner Harbor in Baltimore, Pittsburgh to attend a play and have dinner in restaurants that offer cuisine not locally available.
At Grafton High, Justice recognized student Caleb Stewart, the winner of a full-ride college scholarship valued at $100,000 through the Do It for Babydog sweepstakes.
