Stephens, who has been sheriff for almost five years, made a public statement before the commission voted to discuss the matter in more detail in executive session.
“As you can imagine, the allegations made were hurtful, disappointing and embarrassing,” Stephens said. “I have always had an open door policy to allow access to me to discuss any issues.
“To date, in approximately five years, there have been very few deputies that have come to me with issues that we needed to discuss.”
The letter made allegations of Stephens creating a hostile and negative work environment saying the sheriff displayed a lack of leadership and professionalism, was prone to fits of anger and more.
