United Way 5K raises funds with flying colors

PARKERSBURG -- The United Way of the Mid-Ohio Valley hosted a 5K color run called "Color Me United" Saturday to raise funds for its annual campaign.

Stacy DeCicco, the executive director of the United Way Alliance of the Mid-Ohio Valley, said all the funds raised each year for the annual campaign are put back into the community through grants that fund things like scholarships, obtaining school supplies and supporting nonprofits in the community.

DeCicco said she is beyond thrilled to be able to get out in the community and host events again.

"This is our second event this week that the weather has held off for, and I am so grateful that it has," said DeCicco. "This event was so much fun, and it provided a healthy opportunity for families in the community to get out and spend time together."

DeCicco said there were more than 150 participants at Saturday's run.

The first of those participants to pass the finish line was Alex Hogan of Marietta at 19 minutes and 19 seconds.

Hogan, who is a member of the River City Runners and Walkers Club, said the club keeps him pretty active and he has run in multiple events since COVID restrictions began lifting.

Throughout the route set at Parkersburg City Park were color stations, where volunteers from the Downtown Ambassadors Program lined up to splash people with color.

For many, the event was a first.

"This is my first one I fully ran, but I didn't know where the end was and went an extra lap," said Kathleen Lasure of Millfield, Ohio.

Lasure, who was as covered in colors as one could get, said that she was trying to "win" most colorful.

The event was also a first for Tia Opel of Parkersburg.

"I had so much fun participating in the run," she said. "I am glad I could use today to see some of my friends, be a member of a great community, and help support a great cause along the way."
