PARKERSBURG -- In order to help get its third through fifth graders motivated for the upcoming statewide General Summative Assessment (GSA) testing, Franklin Elementary Center held a pep rally Wednesday to help get students psyched up for the test.
The theme of the rally was superheroes, which saw teachers dress up in costumes, from Wonder Woman and Batman to the school's mascot, Franklin Falcon, and Captain GSA.
"We had a pep rally to get our kids pumped for the state testing that we're going to start next week. We need to have a little celebration for all their hard work that we put forth this year and take a little bit of the stress off of us," said Reading resource teacher Kezia Douglass Parsons. "I think it may enlighten them to do better and I think that acknowledgment of their hard work also will help them produce more and do better next week. "
Each grade level had the chance to show off what they learned during the school year through songs and skits on the subjects that will be on the test.
Third graders performed writing chants, from the five steps of writing, transition words and sentence structure. Fourth graders performed on math vocabulary with hand movements and reading a poem about what the school means to them while spelling out Franklin. Fifth graders did a dance-inspired from a Tik-Tok showing off their academic skills.
Franklin first and second graders got in on the fun as well, showing off signs wishing the older students good luck on tests, while dressing up as superheroes.
According to the state Department of Education website, the West Virginia General Summative Assessment (WVGSA) for students in third through eighth grades is an online summative test given toward the end of the school year to measure student performance on the state's content standards, which provide clear, consistent guidelines for what students should know and be able to do at each grade level.
