PARKERSBURG -- The YMCA of Parkersburg has launched a new Middle School After-School Program in addition to its Elementary School After-School Program.
The program will be offered weekdays from school dismissal to 6 p.m. at Hamilton and Blennerhassett middle schools. Youth in grades 6-8 are eligible for the program.
"This past year has been so challenging for students who were not able to have face-to-face classes every day, so we thought it would be a great time to start a program to help middle school students get more academic support," said Youth Development Coordinator Meissa Diop. "We will provide safety and supervision while keeping them away from risky behaviors and helping them improve their social skills."
A goal for the program is for teens to understand the importance of community services, which in turn allows them to be more connected to their community, Diop said.
"We will also help them understand the importance of Health and Wellness, and incorporate some STEM activities," she said.
The plan is to expand the program next year to more middle schools in Wood County, Diop said.
Cost is $12 per day per child for members and $15 per day per child for non-members. Registration forms are available online, but must be submitted on-site at 1800 30th St., Parkersburg.
The $25 registration fee is waived for the 2020-2021 school year.
