PARKERSBURG -- The Parkersburg Homecoming Festival announced Wednesday that West Virginia native Kathy Mattea will headline the 2021 event in August.
The Grammy Award-winner will close out the two-day celebration and the annual Johnny Staats Bluegrass Festival on Saturday, Aug. 21. Also performing that day will be Wheeling native Tim O'Brien, an accomplished bluegrass musician and producer of Mattea's 2018 album "Pretty Bird."
"It's so cool that we will be celebrating a weekend of all West Virginia music and musicians with two West Virginia Music Hall of Fame members performing," Homecoming Vice President Chuck Lipps said in a release announcing the entertainment lineup.
The state music hall of fame's mobile exhibit will be on display the day of their performances.
After the 2020 festival was called off because of the COVID-19 pandemic, this year's event will return to the two-day format of 2017. It's planned for Friday and Saturday, Aug. 20-21, at Point Park.
The festivities kick off on Aug. 20 with the Davisson Brothers Band of Fairmont. Performances continue Saturday with the Johnny Staats Bluegrass Festival, started in 2001 in honor of the local mandolin maestro's critically acclaimed album "Wires and Wood." It will feature the Putnam Family, the Johnny Staats Band, O'Brien with Jan Fabricius and Mattea.
"We have always wanted to add a featured act to Johnny's festival," Lipps said.
The festival will culminate Aug. 21 with the annual fireworks display.
Homecoming President Woody Miller said he's excited to have the event back after a tough year.
"And what better way to bring West Virginia together than through music?" he said.
