County Commissioners Association of West Virginia accepting entries for essay contest

CHARLESTON — The County Commissioners Association of West Virginia will hold its annual essay contest for eighth grade students in West Virginia to celebrate National County Government Month in April.

Cash prizes of $500, $300 and $200 will be awarded for first-, second- and third-place winners, respectively. The first-place student’s teacher also receives the cash prize for classroom activities and five honorable mentions will receive $50.

A goal of the association is to increase public awareness about county government and the office of county commissioner. The association has partnered with West Virginia educators to encourage students to learn and write about their local county governing body, the county commission.

Student participants are asked to type a 500-word essay on the topic, “How does my county commission make life better for me?” All entries must be emailed by 5 p.m. April 16 to qualify.
