Wood County DAR attends holiday luncheon

VIENNA -- The James Wood Chapter National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution were guests of the Marietta Chapter Ohio Society Sons of the American Revolution and the Captain James Neal Chapter West Virginia Society Sons of the American Revolution annual holiday luncheon held at the Parkersburg Country Club in December.
President John Turley of the West Virginia chapter brought greetings. Those attending from Capt. James Neal Chapter were President Ted Cox, Mike Cox, Rick Cox, Don Brown, Mark LaFrance and Brian and Pebble Freeland. Those attending from the Marietta Chapter were President Tony Durm and Lloyd Cowell.
Regent Mary Ellen Hunt, Blennerhassett Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, led the DAR Opening Ritual assisted by Regent Jane Richards of the James Wood Chapter. Other James Wood Chapter members attending were Jo Silman, Julia Hoffman, Sandra Cowell, Karlyn Lowers, Ruth Callihan and Dina Braniff.
The SAR Color Guard performed the presentation of colors and the retiring the colors.
The keynote address was given by Kevin Ritter on "The Revolutionary, Evolutionary American English Language." For the past six years, Ritter, a Washington County commissioner, has taught history and political Science at Washington State Community College.
"There are two things I love about history. First, since we are all fallen and tend to sin in the same ways as our predecessors, I enjoy learning how those who came before us sought to live out the virtues we all struggle to acquire," he said. "This heroic (and sometimes tragic) struggle is instructive and I find great motivation in the lives of great men and women. Second, I love the diffusion of ideas (like freedom and liberty) throughout history. I love seeing the birth of an idea and watching as it spreads both geographically and across time and finally, how that idea impacts our own life today."

The next meeting will be 11 a.m. Feb. 6 at the Parkersburg Country Club. The program will be "Good Dental Hygiene and How It Affects Your Heart" by Dr. Emily Chow.
