PARKERSBURG — The YMCA of Parkersburg in December partnered with Jordan Thornhill, owner of In Step Coaching, to offer on-site athletic training services for youth.

In Step Coaching is a high-performance sport and fitness training facility in Belpre serving the Mid-Ohio Valley in athlete, personal and team training sessions.

By partnering with the YMCA of Parkersburg, Thornhill can offer the same services on a greater scale while using the Y’s gymnasium.

“We are excited to continue our growth to train athletes here in the MOV,” Thornhill said. “We want to offer as many kids the opportunity to join an environment that is challenging and competitive, but also provide education to empower the athletes with tools to be their best self.”

Thornhill said he came to the Y because In Step and the YMCA of Parkersburg have aligning missions: to impact youth in a positive manner through Christian principles.

“The YMCA was always a safe space for my mom to drop me off to when I was young, and I’m excited to partner with them to have a greater impact on our community’s athletes,” he said.

Over the next few months, Thornhill will transition sports and fitness training to the YMCA of Parkersburg, Program Director Criss Welshans said.

“He wanted to have access to basketball courts, and we wanted to bring a top basketball program to the YMCA of Parkersburg,” Welshans said.

Thornhill also coaches AAU basketball for local athletes.

“We are super excited to continue to grow our AAU basketball program,” he said.

“We feel the team dynamics provide ample opportunities for teachable moments to strengthen character, leadership, and various aspects of the sport experience that performance training doesn’t always provide,” Thornhill said. “It’s a great way for us to ‘put it all together’ for the athletes who train with In Step.”

With a bachelor’s in sport sciences and a master’s in coaching education from Ohio University, Thornhill has experience with athletic performance both as a competitor and a coach.

His journey began as an athlete in basketball, baseball and track. He remains the all-time leading scorer in the history of Belpre High School boy’s basketball. His athletic career ended at age 21 with a severe back injury.

Thornhill’s passion for sports led him to coaching, where he spent 2012-2014 as head coach of Belpre High’s boy’s basketball team and the assistant coach for Parkersburg South’s girl’s basketball team in 2015.

When Thornhill is not offering athletic training, he teaches courses in weight training, circuit training and yoga at Ohio University.

Personal and Team training sessions are offered at the YMCA of Parkersburg’s gymnasium in addition to the standard hours of coaching. Participants must set a time according to Thornhill’s and the YMCA of Parkersburg’s schedules.
