Channell art on exhibit at downtown Parkersburg WesBanco

PARKERSBURG -- Penny S. Channell is the November artist on exhibit at WesBanco on Market Street in Parkersburg.
She has been painting for over 40 years using oils, pencils and acrylics. She took several art classes in school, private lessons and tole painting classes, but is mainly a self-taught artist.
"I'm not sure I have a particular style as I paint whatever I feel leads me at the time," said Channell.
This is her first solo art exhibit but she has had some of her art displayed in retail stores and at the Art Project in the Mall with other artists.
Channell loves all colors, styles and subjects and she always tries to have interesting subject matter or tell a story with each painting.
"I never know what piece of art touches someone as people seem to be attracted to the emotion I try to put into my art," Channell said.
She does consignment painting and has found that the subject matter that most people want are the animals they love or something sentimental to the family such as the homestead or farms. One of the consignment paintings that she remembers quite well was of the Titanic and because it is such a well-known subject it took quite a while to get it exactly to the perfect replica she wanted.
The painting process that Channell has adopted is layering the acrylic colors to get the effect she wants to achieve in a painting.
"Sometimes I have as many as seven layers in order to get the color and effect of the painting," Channell said.
She did a painting with President John F. Kennedy, Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King that was definitely a challenge. Channell painted President Kennedy first and had a difficult time mastering the likeness of Bobby Kennedy. She found if she covered the likeness of President Kennedy she was able to capture Bobby Kennedy. As she continued with this particular painting, she would cover the faces of the subjects she had completed to get the likeness.
The Penny Channell art exhibit will be on display at WesBanco Bank, 415 Market St. during November. The exhibit may be viewed by appointment by calling 304 905-7242 during regular business hours of from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday.
