GLENVILLE -- A business professor in the Glenville State College Department of Business has obtained a Doctor of Education in curriculum and instruction from Marshall University.
Kandas Queen's dissertation, "A Case Study on the West Virginia Remote Online Collaborative Knowledge System (WVROCKS)," focused on the collaboration between higher education institutions to offer students the flexibility to take online WVROCKS courses to help them complete a regents bachelor's of arts or Board of Governors associate's in applied science degree.
WVROCKS was developed by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, with assistance from the West Virginia Network for Educational Telecomputing. A majority of courses in the program are offered fully online, leaving only a limited amount of both face-to-face and asynchronous activities. The program focuses on providing adult learners with a more accessible option to further their education in West Virginia.
A Glenville State alumna, Queen has brought a wealth of knowledge and experience in business and retail to the Department of Business over the years.
"I began my journey in higher education at Glenville State College. Upon graduating with my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, I went to work in management for GoMart and The Kroger Company," said Queen.
Queen worked in retail for over 25 years, with 20 of those in management. While working in the business world, she completed her Master's of Business Administration from West Virginia Wesleyan College.
Later, as her focus began to shift toward education, she returned to school and completed her Doctor of Education in Curriculum and Instruction.
During her years in business, Queen was recognized as a Top Woman in Grocery with an industry award.
She also was awarded numerous sales and shrink awards, broke record sales and was recognized for achieving operational standards with the Rock Solid award during her time with Kroger's.
"As proud as I am of my business successes, I have found that I am most rewarded when a previous student reaches out and tells me how much they appreciated my class and how it helped them," said Queen.
"Teaching others and sharing my years of experience in business with tomorrow's business leaders is very satisfying, and I enjoy helping students achieve their future goals."
Queen also is the director of the Regents Bachelor of Arts Program at Glenville State.
"Glenville State College is home. This is not only where I graduated, but where I grew up. My hometown is in Sand Fork in Gilmer County, and GSC has always been part of the community I grew up in. I am honored by the chance to give back to the place that gave me my start in achieving my goals," said Queen.
