PARKERSBURG - Twelve local nursing students were recognized Thursday as members of the seventh Mid-Ohio Valley cohort of the WVU Medicine Aspiring Nurse Program.
WVU Medicine Camden Clark held a signing ceremony for students from West Virginia Junior College and West Virginia University at Parkersburg.
The program provides accepted students with as much as $25,000 over four semesters to help cover living expenses while they complete their nursing education. The funding includes a sign-on bonus upon employment.
In exchange, participants agree to work for three years at a WVU Medicine hospital after graduation.
"The WVU Medicine Aspiring Nurse Program extends far beyond traditional financial aid," Camden Clark President and CEO Sean Smith said in a news release. "It was established to provide critical support for living expenses, helping to alleviate barriers that can make completing a nursing education difficult."
Students in the latest cohort will complete all their clinical rotations at Camden Clark, allowing them to gain hands-on experience at the hospital before entering professional nursing practice.
Participants also receive support from academic success coaches and retention specialists throughout the program.
"As one of the pilot hospitals when the Aspiring Nurse Program launched, Camden Clark has seen firsthand how impactful this support can be, and we're thrilled to offer this one-of-a-kind program in the Mid-Ohio Valley," Smith said. "We look forward to welcoming our seventh cohort and further strengthening a pipeline of highly trained nurses who will care for patients and families across our region for years to come."

The WVU Medicine Center for Nursing Excellence established the program to reduce financial barriers for nursing students and recruit nurses into the health system's workforce.
