NEW MATAMORAS – Students returning to school on Aug. 20 in the Frontier Local School District will have access to a variety of pediatric-focused health services through a new partnership between the district and Akron Children's School-Based Health Centers.
"With a parent's consent, a nurse practitioner can provide a wide range of medical exams and services to students in person or through telehealth," said Dr. Lisa Miyatake, medical director of school-based health services for Akron Children's. "SBHC is a very successful and proven approach to keeping children healthy in the classroom and is especially well suited for addressing minor illnesses."
Akron Children's research has found each appointment saves a student, on average, two hours and 40 minutes of "seat time," time that would be spent having to leave school for illness or an outside medical appointment.
Laken Shook, who is completing her onboarding as a nurse practitioner and has been the registered nurse in the district, will be available for in-person, in-school appointments on Mondays. Nurse practitioner Stacey Greenup will be available for in-person, in-school appointments while Shook completes her onboarding.
Both are available for telehealth appointments.
