PARKERSBURG – Members of Parkersburg City Council approved the first reading of a contract with a company to pick up trash but voted to table an ordinance regarding a separate recycling service.

Following a public meeting that saw 21 people speak on the subject of city sanitation, council convened for a special meeting and passed the first reading of a five-year contract with Waste Management to provide residential trash pickup services on a 6-3 vote.

Before a proposed contract with Rumpke for a subscription-based curbside recycling program could be discussed, council voted unanimously to table the item until its Feb. 10 meeting.
