Annual autumn event underway at Sweetapple Farm

VINCENT -- An autumn tradition 25 years in the growing continues for the next three weekends at Sweetapple Farm in Vincent where the pumpkin patch and corn maze await.

"It's a family affair out here," said Mona Barrett, owner of the farm located at 149 Sweetapple Road.

The theme for this year's fall festivities is the nursery rhyme Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Barrett said.

This is the 25th year Sweetapple Farm has done the fall promotion, she said.

The farm will be open on 4-8 p.m. Fridays in October, 10-8 p.m. Saturdays in October and 11-6 p.m. Sundays. It will close for the season at 8 p.m. Oct. 26.

The drought and heat wave had an impact, but it was minimal, Barrett said. The corn is green in the maze and the pumpkins in the two patches come in all sizes, she said.

People can go into the two pumpkin patches and harvest their own pumpkin or they can get pumpkins that are already picked, Barrett said. A wagon is available to carry pumpkins, she said.

"We have plenty of pumpkins in the field. All sizes," she said.

The maze is an educational experience for children based on Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, she said. For example, among the stations in the maze is how the sun, the moon and the stars can affect agriculture, Barrett said.

Besides pumpkins and the corn maze, the farm features other family-oriented activities, Barrett said.

Participants can make their own scarecrow and take it home, she said.

"People love that," Barrett said.

Kids can paint pumpkins and take them home, too, Barrett said.

"Children of all ages like to paint pumpkins, too," she said.

The hayride takes about 25 minutes and goes through the fields where cattle graze. Goats and other animals can be fed by children.

And wood cutouts of cows are in a barn where kids can pretend they are milking a cow, Barrett said.

"I tell them if one kicks them, to let me know," she said.
