2024 newspaper cookbook entries deliver world of flavors to judges

By Gwen Sour 2 min read

ROCKPORT -- The Parkersburg News and Sentinel and Marietta Times held its 70th annual Cookbook Contest tasting party at the Rockport Church of Christ on Wednesday.

This year's cookbook theme centers on "International Flair at Home." The contestants were asked to cook an item in one of three categories: Appetizers and Additions, International Entree or the dessert category, Globetrotting Goodies.

The panel of judges for this contest included Kiki Angelos, Jess Mancini, Christina Myer, Amy Phelps and Mrs. Joseph C. Snyder.

Out of the 76 recipes submitted, 12 were chosen for judging in the competition. One of those chosen was Sherry Noland who said she loves to participate in the Cookbook Contest. Her recipe was an apple, blackberry and walnut pie. All the fruits and walnuts from the pie were sourced locally with the apples originating from an orchard in Ohio, Lane's Farm. Everything else is from her family's property -- they spend the season collecting the berries as they ripen on the farm and they collect and crack open the walnuts in their driveway.

Noland also said she loves to play around with recipes and this contest provides an outlet.

"I like to take things and experiment," said Noland. "Sometimes, I take two or three tries and tweak them and change them until I get something that I like."

The grand prize winner, who will receive a $500 Piggly Wiggly gift card, will be announced when the cookbook comes out on Nov. 20.
