Surgical Precision: WVU Medicine Camden Clark surgeons celebrate milestones in robot-aided procedures

By Staff Reports 1 min read

PARKERSBURG -- WVU Medicine Camden Clark Medical Center general surgeons Dr. Shawna Grimm and Dr. Warner Wang both reached the milestone of completing 1,000 robotic assisted surgeries each.

Grimm and Wang utilize da Vinci Xi technology to perform robotic-assisted procedures at Camden Clark. The robotic surgeries are still done by the hands of a surgeon, who operates the arms of the robot to create microscopic incisions. The da Vinci Xi is used for not only general surgeries but also cardiothoracic, gynecologic and urological procedures.

A release from the hospital says the technique allows for fewer and smaller incisions, less pain, and faster recovery times for patients. Robotic surgery is considered a minimally invasive alternative to open surgeries. Due to the notably fewer incisions and ability for quicker recovery times, the robotic assisted surgery also provides an opportunity to reduce costs and potential complications compared to an open surgery.
