MARIETTA — An historic military vessel that transported troops during World War II, including as part of a backup force in the D-Day invasion, will dock in Marietta next month.

The LST-325 Memorial Landing Ship will be at the Ohio River Levee and open for tours from Sept. 12-15, the City of Marietta and the Marietta-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau announced.

Landing Ship Tanks played a crucial role in World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam, according to a release from the CVB. The LST-325 is now a floating museum, dedicated to preserving “the memory of these ships and all the countless heroic men who died in battle during (their) service to their country.”

Tours of the ship will be offered from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily while it’s in town, with the last tour commencing at 4:59 p.m., the release said.

Children are not only welcome but encouraged to visit, the release said. Adults can tour for $15, while the cost is $7 for children ages 6 to 17 and free for those 5 and under.

An opening ceremony is planned for 9 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 12.

“Marietta is proud to host the LST-325, recognizing the importance of preserving and honoring our military heritage,” the release said. “The community’s generous support ensures that the ship remains in top condition, ready to educate and inspire future generations.”

The LST-325 last docked in Marietta during the 2010 Ohio River Sternwheel Festival.

Starting at $2.99/week.
