Roofing apprentices nail down places in national competition

MINERAL WELLS — Two apprentices from Roofers Local 242 in Mineral Wells have placed in a national competition.

Zach Delo and Jeremiah Johnson competed in the United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Trades’ inaugural National Apprenticeship Competition in May in St. Louis. The event was hosted by Roofers Local 2.

Delo and Johnson each placed second against other winners of regional events in their categories. Delo competed in the first-year category and Johnson in the second year.

Each received $4,000.

Nine apprentices competed in the first-year, second-year and third year categories. They displayed their skills using roofing and waterproofing materials.

“To have two of the nine competitors at this inaugural event speaks volumes to the skill and hard work of both our apprentices and their instructors, Ben Harrison and Derek Slack,” said Tim Maxcy, Local 242 business manager. “To say that I am proud of all of these men and the direction that our apprenticeship program is headed would be a huge understatement. West Virginia and the Mid-Ohio valley’s apprenticeship programs are turning out some truly skilled craftsmen and women.”
