Chief WVU economist kicking off Roane County Chamber of Commerce speaking series

SPENCER -- The director of an economic research program will be the keynote speaker next month at a luncheon of the Roane County Chamber of Commerce.
John Deskins, director of the Bureau of Business and Economic Research at West Virginia University, will be the first speaker of the year in the chamber's Lunch and Learn series at 11 a.m. Feb. 22 at Steele Hollow Estates, 130 Steele Hollow Road, Spencer.
Deskins' presentation will begin at 11:30 a.m. Tickets are $10, which includes a boxed lunch, and are available at https://tinyurl.com/drdeskins.
Deskins will speak about state and county economies and a forecast of the economy in Roane County.
Regarded as the top economist in the state, Deskins provides economic outlooks to the state legislature and community leaders throughout West Virginia. Deskins is the associate dean for outreach and engagement and an associate professor of economics for the John Chambers College of Business and Economics and the assistant dean of outreach and engagement for the dean's office.
He leads the research bureau's efforts to serve the state by providing economic analysis and macroeconomic forecasting to business leaders and policymakers. He has testified before the United States Senate and House of Representatives and the West Virginia Legislature.
Deskins has delivered more than 100 speeches to business, government and community groups and his comments have appeared in numerous The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Bloomberg, CNBC, National Public Radio and PBS, among others.
He also has been a principal investigator or co-principal investigator on more than $2 million in funded research.
