Items from Adams family estate going up for auction

By Jess Mancini 3 min read

PARKERSBURG -- A vintage Steinway piano and an antique cabinet used by a prominent Parkersburg dentist are being offered at an estate auction next week.

The sale at the Adams estate at 2019 Park Ave. in Parkersburg will be the biggest onsite sale by the Dexter City Auction House, said Randy Clark with the auction house.

Many antiques, memorabilia and items of local history fill the home, he said.

"There's four floors just packed full," Clark said.

The auction will start at 10 a.m. Thursday. Clark expects it to take at least five hours.

Dr. Charles Adams, a well-known local dentist, built the home in the 1920s. It has remained in the Adams family since then.

The last Adams to live in the home was Florence Chenoweth Adams, who died in December at the age of 90. Never married, Florence was an accomplished musician who attended the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and the Juilliard School in New York City.

She bought the Steinway Model L piano in 1970, Clark said.

"That's going to be big," Clark said. "The (Model L) is supposed to be the best Steinway's there is."

The piano was tuned in July by a certified Steinway technician, Clark said.

The piano will be inside the home and available to see by appointment or with permission on the day of the sale. Call Clark at 740-706-0417 for more information.

The piano has generated much interest from prospective buyers from out of state, Clark said.

Another big item is an antique oak dentist's cabinet used by Dr. Adams, Clark said. Adams graduated from dental school in 1916, Clark said.

The cabinet also has generated many calls from interested buyers, he said. The piece is a large three-section, four-door, 26-drawer original oak dental cabinet.

"There's going to be a lot of interest in that," he said.

The contents of the home and yard will be sold at the auction, Clark said.

On-site auctions have grown less popular with the advent of the internet, he said. In this case, the items are so many and are located in an historically significant place, Clark said.

Besides, there will be plenty of parking available and a tent from McGuffey Tents will be erected, he said.

"It just made sense to have it there," Clark said. "I expect there to be a very big crowd."

Also, items from the estate of Adams' son, Dr. Charles Adams Jr., who also was a dentist, will be included in the sale, Clark said.

The auction will include early cast-iron items; stoneware; mounted game; an 1840 Eli Terry weight clock; Victorian furniture; pottery; lots of heavy carved furniture; an oak rolltop desk; musical instruments including an autoharp, xylophones and sitar; old swords; several barrister bookcases; railroad lanterns; military items; and Donaghho stone jars from Parkersburg.
