PARKERSBURG -- The WVU Medicine Camden Clark Medical Center honored volunteers and awarded scholarships at a luncheon earlier this week.
In celebration of National Volunteer Week, in conjunction with the 71st Annual Meeting of the hospital Auxiliary, the medical center honored its volunteers Tuesday for their service and the Auxiliary presented several gifts including scholarships to area college students.
"It is our pleasure to host the Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon for our Volunteers and the Auxiliary's 71st Annual Meeting," WVU Medicine Camden Clark Medical Center Auxiliary and Volunteer Manager Margie Reed said. "We celebrate our volunteers for the outstanding contributions they give to the hospital as well as to our community. With the volunteers giving support to many of our departments within the hospital, their dedication, commitment and generosity go far beyond our expectations.
"The auxiliary is able to provide donations to the hospital and scholarships for area students through a variety of fundraisers including special sales of uniforms, shoes, jewelry, linens, books and gifts and purses," Reed said. "Our Auxiliary Gift Shop and snack cart, staffed by volunteers, are both a benefit to our patients, visitors, and staff. This past year we were able to stock live flowers in our Gift Shop for sale as well."
On behalf of the Auxiliary, President Roger Bennett presented a $50,000 donation during the luncheon which will benefit four Camden Clark departments. Items purchased with the donation funds presented include a bariatric stretcher for the Ambulance Service, an automated door for entrance into the Oncology Department, support wedges for patient floors and a transport chair. A $1,500 donation was also given to enhance hospital week for Camden Clark employees.
In addition, Judith Ball, auxiliary scholarship chairman, presented $7,500 in Leo D. Carsner Scholarships to three area college students pursuing degrees in healthcare professions. Local college student recipients receiving the scholarships included:
* Haley Cothern, Parkersburg, West Virginia University
* Olivia Cress, Ellenboro, West Virginia University
* Chase Lang, Parkersburg, West Virginia University
The auxiliary has presented more than $3,800,000 in hospital donations and more than $160,000 in scholarships since its establishment.
"We truly want to express our appreciation of gratitude to our volunteers and our auxiliary," Reed said.
