PARKERSBURG -- A student from Warren High School is the first recipient of a scholarship named after a local realtor who died in 2022.

Clara Pettit received the first Valerie Young Memorial Scholarship through Coldwell Banker Select Properties for $3,000. Petit is a senior at Warren High School and plans to attend Williams College in Williamstown, Mass.

Valerie Young, 60, was a realtor in the Mid-Ohio Valley. Young, who died in August 2022 from cancer, was active in the Parkersburg Area Association of Realtors, won the Realtor of the Year award in 2005 and served on numerous committees and participated projects in the community.

"We received so many great applications and all of the applicants were deserving of an opportunity," said Blaine Ritchie, owner of Coldwell Banker.

"This speaks to the youth in our community, their parents and their support systems for encouraging them to achieve great things," Ritchie said. "We thank everyone who submitted an application, and we look forward to continuing this tradition in honor of Valerie."
