MARIETTA -- A new barbecue joint is now open in Marietta.
A few weeks ago, J's BBQ and Grill opened its doors for dine-in customers at its location inside the Baymont by Wyndham Hotel on Pike Street in Marietta.
Owners John Hammat and his niece Sara Argabrite thought it was time to try something new by offering locally made and smoked barbecue.
"It was something that we hadn't tried, it was a new challenge. I've done fast food (and) full service with and without alcohol and it was time to try something on my own," Hammat said.
Argabrite said it was a goal for her and her husband to become business owners and with Hammat's extensive restaurant experience, she felt it was a good opportunity.
Goliath is one of the restaurant's employees and no, it's not a person, it's a smoker. Goliath is set up out back behind the restaurant and smokes chicken, ribs and pork.
Pulled pork is a main item at J's BBQ as it is served on nachos, fries and mac and cheese. Another hot items is the ribs which Argabrite says are huge.
Some of the other menu items include sandwiches served on King's Hawaiian buns and steak.
For dessert, J's BBQ has one-of-a-kind options with bakery items from Lisa's Sweet Stop.
"We have always been a customer (of) hers and once we started the restaurant, it was a no brainer to go with her because we've always loved her products. It's nice to supply something that's made fresh every week for the customer," Argabrite said. "We offer nothing else but what she brings us. We are currently the only restaurant that carries Lisa's Sweet Stop."
Based in Beverly, Lisa's Sweet Stop uses a food truck to travel around the Mid-Ohio Valley and Argabrite said the plan is for J's BBQ to join Sweet Stop owner Lisa Huck with a food truck of their own offering barbecue on the go.
"The smoke is mobile and it gives us the opportunity with the food truck to reach out further than to just have to wait for people to come into the restaurant," Hammat said.
The partnership with Huck has helped kick off business at J's.
"It's phenomenal that she has advertised us. We get people from Beverly, Devola and Lowell. This local restaurant supports us and we're exclusive for them," Argabrite said.
In the coming weeks, J's will also have a full service bar.
J's BBQ and Grill is open Monday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. but Argabrite said the hours might be changed once the bar is operational.
