PARKERSBURG -- A Parkersburg company received an architectural design award from the West Virginia Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
Pickering Associates received an Honor Award for Interiors for 2020 for the renovation of an office in Parkersburg. The second-floor office, located in an historic 1930s era utilitarian commercial property on Market Street, was originally the W.T. Grant mass-merchandise store.
The client was interested in renovating the space to have a prominent downtown presence for their new office location.
The new layout takes advantage of existing daylighting, and views to Market Street as well as the exposed brick wall surfaces that were uncovered and restored.
The open office concept of the building and the use of existing materials played an important part of the overall vision for the space.
AIA West Virginia this week announced the winners of the AIA's top design awards for 2020. Thirty-one project submissions and a submission for craftsmanship from the chapter were reviewed by a four-person jury headed by Barton Ross, president and founding partner of Barton Ross & Partners Architects of Chestertown, Md. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and social distancing practices, AIA West Virginia announced the winners with an online "Academy Award" style celebration on April 24.
"The Design Awards are a celebration of architecture in West Virginia," said Matt Breakey, President of AIA West Virginia. "It's a wonderful opportunity for our members to celebrate the successes of these projects with their clients, and for the chapter as a whole to celebrate good design and the positive impact it has on the communities we serve throughout West Virginia. Architecture is a creative profession, and nothing highlights that more than our efforts to find a unique way to honor this year's winners with our larger community online!"
