COLUMN: Views from the road

It might be the last week of summer, but it already feels like fall. The past week has been quite a whirlwind with Mother Nature and the gridiron season heating up. There are numerous big showdowns this week in the Mid-Ohio Valley, but during last Friday's game in Elizabeth where Calhoun County upended the host Tigers of Wirt County I witnessed something I'd never before seen. Calhoun County's Nic Butler recovered a fumble on the opening drive of the affair after the orange and black won the toss and elected to receive. After taking possession, the Red Devils threw an interception ...

COLUMN: Love of the game

Kansas City starting pitcher Seth Lugo inked a two-year, $46 million dollar contract for 2026-27. Left-hander Connor Thomas is playing under a one-year, pre-arbitration contract with a base salary of $171,011. The Royals teammates were both in on the action Sunday afternoon at Progressive Field in Cleveland. Lugo, who allowed nine hits and as many runs, didn't make it out of the fourth. During what turned out to be a three-run third, Lugo basically didn't bother on a "hustle effort play" to first base which allowed Guardians leadoff man Steven Kwan to reach on an infield single ...

COLUMN: Back into the fold

Vacation is long over and it's been back to the grind time. Suffice it to say my football visits have been anything but normal this year. A week ago Friday it was a trip to Spencer to visit Roane County and head football coach Paul Burdette's Raiders. Although the trip over was fine and dandy, things got a little hairy on the way back to Elizabeth on West Virginia 14. First, there was the random deer just chilling a couple feet from the road, but it stood its ground. Then, somewhere before Reedy the storms were starting to brew in the distance and I had to come to a near ...

Runners take your mark: Know race day weather and plan accordingly

Saturday is race day. If you are taking part in the News and Sentinel Races you already know that. Regardless of if you are doing the half marathon or the two-mile race you have likely trained for weeks or even months so that you will do as well as you can. You have picked out your favorite shoes, maybe a special hat or running shirt you really like. Have you picked the weather? The weather is something of course that we cannot control. As race organizers, we would have ordered the perfect day if we could. We and you, for that matter, are stuck with whatever nature throws our way. ...

Runners take your mark: Fort Boreman Park will elevate the half marathon

When you are standing Saturday on Juliana Street awaiting the start of the News and Sentinel Half Marathon, turn around for a second and take a look at the flag on the top of the hill that is behind you. The flag is part of Fort Boreman Park, a historical part of Parkersburg that you will visit in the next two hours. The race you are about to run will take you through the park between miles six and eight. The park will offer you an ideal view of the downtown area that you will run through in the first miles of the race. Fort Boreman was constructed at the location in 1863 so that ...

COLUMN: First innings to forget

HUNTINGTON — The first inning was not kind to Gilmer County and Ripley in their respective state championship games on Saturday. The Titans, who fell to Sherman 4-1 in the Class A final, walked the first four batters of the game en route to an early 2-0 deficit that they never recovered ...
