PARKERSBURG — Hey Grandpa? What’s showing at the Actors Guild of Parkersburg?
Well, the guild will host a “Hee Haw” fundraiser where country music and family friendly humor will be center stage at 7 p.m. Friday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
The show will be a spinoff of the TV classic that aired on CBS in the 1970s and 1980s and featured Roy Clark, Buck Owens, Grandpa Jones, Lulu Roman, Junior Samples, Minnie Pearl and Archie Campbell.
“We are so excited that Roy Clark Jr., son of the late, great Roy Clark who starred on the original ‘Hee Haw,’ is joining us for this variety show,” said event chairman Sherry Wilson Braid.
Clark Jr.’s sons Caleb and Josiah, along with many other local artists playing banjo, mandolin, guitar and bass, also will playing in the band for the show, she said.
Music will include well-known country classics by Owens, Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty such as “Ring of Fire,” “Coal Miner’s Daughter” and “Crazy.”
Skits made famous on the TV “Hee Haw” will feature Kiki Angelos of Chick-fil-A and WVU Parkersburg President Torie Jackson, Pam Creel of Wine Down on Market and Apricot Lane, Keith McClung of Crown Floral, Jon Leavitt of Leavitt Funeral Home and Rick Hastings of Pioneer Presbyterian Church. Many members of the guild also will perform.
Popcorn, homemade cookies, pepperoni rolls and cake pops will be sold in the lobby during the show. Water, beer and wine will be available.
Braid and her team have been planning the event since May.
“I’ve always been a ‘Hee Haw’ fan, having watched it as a child with my parents every Saturday night at 7 p.m.,” Braid said. “That’s where I first became a fan of country music, which my dad loved so much. ‘Hee Haw’ was probably the spark that eventually led to me performing as Patsy Cline at the Actors Guild in 2000. I’ve happily sung Patsy tunes as Patsy Cline for 23 years in the Mid-Ohio Valley and all over Ohio and West Virginia.”
The “Hee Haw” production team also includes Greg Merritt, P.T. Dabbs and Reinnie Leavitt and Guild fundraising committee members Betty Dotson, Charlie Matthews and David Rexroad.
“We hope people will come out and support our local community theater and enjoy a fun-filled night of fantastic comedy, country and bluegrass music,” Braid said.
Tickets cost $20 and are available at the Actors Guild website, https://www.actors-guild.com/buy-tickets.html.
