While Spring is having a difficult time coming out of hibernation, the continued nasty weather has left the Red Cross scrambling. Bad weather has resulted in the cancelation of 270 blood drives across the country, meaning more than 9,500 blood and platelet donations were left uncollected in the first two weeks of March alone.
Red Cross daily goals are for 13,000 blood and platelet donations to keep up with the demands of hospitals and patients.
That means it is up to eligible, willing folks to make up for all those lost donations opportunities.
Opportunities abound: Parkersburg Blood Donation Center, 3210 Dudley Ave., Parkersburg, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fridays; Ohio Valley University, 1 Campus View Drive, Vienna, from 12:30-5:30 p.m. April 4; Williamstown High School, 219 W. 5th St., Williamstown from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 6.
Potential donors can find out if they are eligible, and complete pre-reading and health history questions online at redcrossblood.org.
One donation can save more than one life. And if that is not motivation enough, you will probably get juice and a cookie, too.
Mother Nature has dealt a blow to the Red Cross's blood and platelet collection efforts. Roll up you sleeves, folks, and help get them back on track.
