SPENCER -- Spencer-area middle school students will learn in a brand-new school this fall -- and a "Friend with Paws" will join them.
The Roane County Board of Education will welcome parents, students, and community members to the new Spencer Middle School on Wednesday, Aug. 14, beginning at 11 a.m. for a "pup rally" to be followed immediately by the ribbon cutting for the $20 million school facility.
The new Spencer Middle School is located at 2 Raider Way in Spencer, on the campus of Roane County High School. The school was funded in part by an approximately $18 million grant from the School Building Authority of West Virginia and over $2.5 million from the Roane County Board of Education.
The "pup rally" event will introduce Flora, a golden retriever, to the Spencer Middle School community. Flora is a trained therapy dog and is provided to the school through the "Friends with Paws" program, part of the West Virginia Communities in Schools program spearheaded by First Lady Cathy Justice and in partnership with the West Virginia Department of Education.
After the ribbon cutting, members of the community are invited to tour the new school, which opens for students on Wednesday, Aug, 21, the start of the new school year for students in Roane County.
