CHARLESTON — New class. Same result.

The Williamstown girls track team had won the last five Class A state championships in track. And the only reason the Yellowjackets won’t be winning a sixth straight single-A title is because they were bumped up to double-A this season. Well, they went ahead and won that, too.

Competing against several schools that will make the jump to triple-A next season, Williamstown accumulated 90.5 points as a team Saturday at UC Stadium at Laidley Field to finish atop the team standings, well ahead of runner-up Herbert Hoover (69.33), third-place East Fairmont (69) and fourth-place Elkins (68).

“This group of girls, group of athletes, group of coaches — I just have to sit back and watch sometimes,” said Williamstown head coach Zach Hall. “They make it easy for me.”

Hall’s program thrives on teamwork and balance. The Yellowjackets are armed with a multitude of versatile athletes who put points up across the board.

“We’re always a team,” he said. “We score points everywhere. That’s the goal. That’s what you have to have. It’s not just having a good group of sprinters or a good group of distance people, it’s having a good, whole team.”

Senior standout Shelby Smith led the way, claiming a pair of individual titles in addition to anchoring the winning 4×2 team.

“A lot of emotions,” said Smith, who was also fourth in the 100 (12.59). “I’m just so happy with my performance and my teammates’ performance. I’m so happy to be a part of the Williamstown program. They have influenced me, the coaches and the teammates, for the better and pushed me to be the best version of myself. I’m so proud of myself and my team.”

Smith began Saturday with a first-place finish in the 400 (57.44) besting runner-up Kyndyll Butler of Ripley, who crossed in 59.68.

Later, Smith teamed up with Audrey Lefebure, Izzy Zide and Addison Richardson to bring home the 4×2 title with a time of 1:46.27.

“In the end, my goal is to score as many points as I can for our team,” Smith said. “I was able to push myself and push my teammates as well. It all just dominoed — one person pushing the other and then the vibes just, it goes through the whole team.”

Smith capped off her high school career with a performance of a lifetime in the 200 finals. After clocking in at 25.39 in the preliminaries Friday, Smith upped the ante and crossed the finish line in 24.99 seconds to place first.

When she saw her time on the scoreboard, her jaw dropped.

“I broke 25 for the very first time,” Smith said. “I was just so happy. I never thought I’d finally do it, and I did it. Especially because it was my last (high school race), it really just put the icing on the cake. All that hard work and training I’ve been putting in just paid off in the end.”

Butler was just under a second behind her in fourth (25.95) but was quick to congratulate Smith, who wore her emotions on her sleeve in the moment.

“She’s a great athlete, and she puts in the time to be that way,” Hall said. “It’s something special to watch.

“Track brings out highs and lows. Hopefully here, it’s a high. Everybody loves to perform down here. They’re trying to get their picture with the Capitol in the background for our state champion wall. They do well.”

Williamstown also got eight points from Reagan Corbett in the discus, who’s top throw of 129-10 netted her second place. The 4×4 team of Cassie Sites, Luci Collins, Makaela Bandy and Ava Lightfritz notched a top five finish in the 4×4 with a time of 4:19.65.

Williamstown has a strong and accomplished senior class that is going to be missed, but those seniors made a major statement on their way out.

“It just shows we can be a very consistent program, no matter what class,” Smith said. “I think that’s a good testimony. Don’t count yourself out no matter what situation you’re in. I think that’s just a good example for our town and teams around the state.”

Elsewhere in double-A, Roane County’s Josie Cox was runner-up in the 300 hurdles with a time of 46.55. She also was fourth in the 100 hurdles (16.28) behind Ripley’s Braylin Lutz in third (15.89).

Herbert Hoover freshman Laysen Fletcher captured high-point honors.

On the boys side, Williamstown placed third in double-A behind champion Point Pleasant and runner-up Frankfort.

The Yellowjackets were led by Frank Conner, who was third in the 1600 (4:26.06) and fourth in the 800 (1:59.36). Teammate Tyrell Miller placed fourth in the pole vault at 12-6.

The ‘Jackets’ 4×2 team came away with a top five finish as Will Sites, Jackson Kerr, Carson Haines and Carson Brundige put together a time of 1:32.94. Brundige also was fourth in the 200 (22.70).
