PARKERSBURG — Brynn Frye had three hits and knocked in two runs while teammate Camella Cooper pitched a complete game five-hitter with 11 strikeouts to help lead Parkersburg to an 8-2 Class AAAA, Region IV, Section 2 victory versus Capital here Wednesday at Godbey Fields.
The Big Reds of first-year head coach Erica Cameron pushed across three runs in the second and sixth frames against losing pitcher Faithie Hall. The Cougar right-hander went the distance and allowed nine hits, four earned runs, two walks and struck out five.
“Pretty good effort,” admitted coach Cameron. “I was pleased with some of the hitting. The triples that we had and the doubles. We had some very key baserunning. Like the tagging up that we did. That was crucial. We had several steals. That all was good.
“We just needed to, you know, I would have liked to have seen us have some more consecutive hits, but we did have some clutch hitting from the bottom of our lineup, and when the top of the lineup can come in clutch that’s a game-changer. I was very happy to see that tonight.”
PHS, which topped the Cougars of head man Adam Snyder by scores of 6-0 and 17-7 during the regular season, improved to 5-13 and will take on top-seeded Parkersburg South at 6 p.m. today in the double-elimination tournament.

Cooper’s opposite-field double to right to open the second led to the Big Reds’ first run. No. 8 hitter Sydney Davis stepped to the plate with courtesy runner Ella Collins at third and Addi Cameron at second after she walked and swiped a base. Davis produced an RBI groundout that led to a 2-0 lead following a Cougar error.
Center fielder Danica Coffman turned the lineup over after doubling to left-center and Frye delivered a run-scoring three-bagger to center.
Capital catcher Jadan Bishop had a two-out single in the first, but was left stranded. Cooper walked Reese Lovern to open the second, but Eliza Clark’s bunt attempt turned into a double play when Big Red third baseman JoJo Wilson grabbed it in the air and then fired across the diamond to Krista Durkin at first. Although Carolynn Slater had a two-out opposite-field single to left, Cooper struck out Taylor Johnson.
The Cougars, who slipped to 3-23 and will try to snap a 13-game slide when they return to town Friday in an elimination game, finally got to Cooper in the third with the help of an error.
No. 9 hitter Amiya Robinson reached on a bunt when Durkin’s throw to first hit her in the helmet. Leadoff batter Katie Crowder walked, but was picked off first by Dennis, who did the same thing to the Cougar in the fifth at third base. Following a strikeout of Hall, Cooper walked Bishop, who proceeded to swipe her 32nd bag as Ella Sedosky came through with a two-run single back up the box.

PHS managed to get a run back in the bottom of the frame when Durkin tripled and scored on a wild pitch prior to Kendall Kimes’ single.
Cooper retired the side in order for the first time in the fourth. She allowed a one-out double to Sedosky in the sixth and a leadoff single to Sloter in the seventh.
The Big Reds led 5-2 after tacking on a run in the fifth. Dennis reached via an error and courtesy runner Faithlynn Butcher scored on Cooper’s RBI sacrifice fly.
Davis and Coffman opened the sixth with consecutive one-out singles. Frye, who scored in the inning after Durkin reached on an error via a double-steal, had the only RBI via a knock to left.
“We were aggressive and we’re usually aggressive on the basepaths,” said coach Snyder. “Sometimes it gets you. Sometimes it doesn’t. The catcher had a pretty accurate arm.

“We were aggressive hitting. We put the ball in play. I mean they made plays, but some of our top hitters didn’t hit, so it kind of hurts you and it’s a lot of momentum. Other than that it was a good game.”
