CHARLESTON — The Doddridge County boys put together one of the most dominant campaigns in program history, culminating in a Class A state championship Saturday at UC Stadium at Laidley Field.

The Bulldogs, who did not lose a meet all season, scored in all 12 of Saturday’s events — including three titles — to amass 134 points compared to 92 for runner-up Wahama.

“It’s exciting,” said DCHS boys coach Bobby Burnside. “It’s been a really special season. We finish by winning this meet, and we actually won every meet we participated in. This whole weekend, we break two state meet records, four school records — it’s one of the greatest teams I think we’ve ever had if you look at overall performance.”

On the girls side, in a single-A field projected to be very competitive, Doddridge came away with a 104-79.5 victory over runner-up St. Marys.

The Bulldog girls put together an all-around performance.

“We had a couple things go bad Friday night, but today everything just seemed to go well,” said Doddridge girls coach Craig Kellar. “Everyone was chipping in. We scored in a lot of events. We’ve got a good group of seniors and they kind of lead the way. Just proud of all of them. Very happy with everyone’s performance.”

The DCHS girls captured a pair of state crowns Saturday, both in the relays. Brooke DeHaven, Jaycee Lipscomb, Taylor Bodkin and Payton Currey teamed up to win the 4×2 with a time of 1:51.72, besting runner-up Gilmer County (1:51.72; Allie Ellyson, Malory Casteel, Laura Brannon, Kadessa Stitt).

Lipscomb and Currey then teamed up with Payton Trent and Kasey Underwood to prevail in the 4×1, clocking in at 51.05, ahead of second place Magnolia (52.02; London Alexander, Sienna McKeever, Jessa Anderson, Bella Sockman).

“We loaded them up and hoped for the best,” Kellar said of the relays. “We tried to get several kids involved in that, and they executed. They were pretty happy, so it’s good to see that.”

The Bulldogs scored in eight other events, including a runner-up finish from Trent in the 200 (26.61). Trent also was third in the 400 (1:00.70)

Doddridge racked up points in the pole vault, with Lipscomb placing second (9-0), Aleigh Cheeseman finishing fifth (8-0) and Bentli Linville coming in eighth (7-0).

Currey chipped in a third-place finish in the 100 (12.73).

For the runner-up Blue Devils, there was plenty of individual success to celebrate. St. Marys took home three state titles and capped the year off by winning the 4×4. Laney Watkins, Avry Bennett, Natalie Bartrug and Anna Bennett teamed up for a time of 4:15.94.

Watkins and Avry Bennett made noise in the 400, with Watkins winning (59.59) and Bennett placing fourth (1:02.67). Watkins also was fourth in the 100 (12.74)

Avry Bennett won the pole vault crown (10-2) and was fourth in the 300 hurdles (48.90) while Anna Bennett was runner-up in the 1600 (5:30.22 — just ahead of third-place Bentlee Williams from Ritchie County) and fourth in the 800 (2:26.30).

Another local standout in single-A girls was Ravenswood’s Riley Sotomayor. On Saturday, Sotomayor captured gold in the 800 with a time of 2:21.00. The Red Devils junior also was runner-up to Watkins in the 400 (1:00.61).

On the boys side, Doddridge dominated the pole vault as the Bulldogs finished 1-2-3 in the event, led by Tristan Swiger’s winning effort of 13 feet. He was followed by teammates Trey McDonough (12-6) and Nathanael Lloyd (12-0).

Doddridge also had three placers in two other events — the shot put and the 200.

In the shot, Braden Murphy was third at 43-9, while teammates Jaden Solomon (5th; 42-4.75) and Aaron Glaspell (6th; 42-4) weren’t far behind.

Walters-Hickman came in second in the 200 with a time of 21.94, while fellow Bulldogs Aiden James (22.93) and Jerod Trent (23.00) placed fourth and fifth respectively.

On two occasions, Walters-Hickman came about as close as you can to winning a race without actually doing it. The Doddridge freshman finished one-tenth of a second behind Wahama’s Connor Lambert in the 200, and in the 100, Walters-Hickman crossed the finish line in 10.65, just four-hundredths of a second behind Lambert again.

Walters-Hickman didn’t leave state without some gold, though, as helped the Bulldogs establish two new state meet records in the sprint relays.

In the 4×2, He teamed with James, Trent and Brycen Eidel to put together a winning time of 1:30.64. Not long after, Doddridge swapped Talyn Snyder in for Eidel for the 4×1, and the result was a 43.46-second finish to win state in that event as well.

The Bulldogs bested Wahama in both events. They also saw Eidel place runner-up in the 300 hurdles (40.95) and Trent finish third in the 400 (50.78). Carter Sias also claimed a top five finish in the 1600 (4:31.99).

“Not necessarily a ton of individual winners, but I think that speaks to the young men on our team and the depth that we have,” Burnside said. “Really, really great performances across the board.”

Elsewhere in single-A, there were local state champs in three events.

Tyler Consolidated’s Amos Kimble won the 1600 after producing a time of 4:19.87.

The St. Marys 4×4 team of Logan Eddy, Reece Westfall, Noah Russell and Ryan Kent clocked in at 3:32.98 to bring home gold.

And the shot put featured all kinds of local flavor, led by Magnolia’s Darin Shimp with a top mark of 45-7.75. Behind him were Ritchie County’s Chase Morris (44-3.25), Murphy, Magnolia’s Matthew Anderson (42-6.75), Solomon, Glaspell and Wirt County’s Braden Whipkey (41-3.5) rounding out the top seven.

Ritchie County’s Dylan Malolepszy had a strong showing Saturday, placing runner-up in both the 400 (50.52) and 800 (1:56.20). Not far behind him in the 800 was Kimble, who placed third (2:00.19).

Trinity’s Chase Livengood took home high-point honors.
