Roundup: Williamstown girls prevail over Ritchie
ELLENBORO — Faith Pickens scored 19 points to help lead Williamstown past Ritchie County 64-44 Friday.
The Yellowjackets, who improved to 14-4 on the year, also got 12 points apiece from Quinn Bunch and Gracie Montgomery plus 10 from Arissa Burt. Williamstown made eight 3-pointers in the game — four by Montgomery and three by Bunch.
WHS led 21-15 after one and 34-23 at halftime. Ritchie County (12-5) slumped in the third and fell behind 49-29 going into the fourth. With Pickens in foul trouble, the Rebels got within 10 at one point in the final eight minutes, but the ‘Jackets withstood the rally.
Ritchie, which visits Roane County Tuesday, got 19 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and three steals from Elsa law. Emily Bush added nine points for RCHS while Rae Rupert and Cheslie Jeffrey chipped in six each. Rupert added eight boards and three dimes to her statline.
BOYS
Southern 48, Belpre 41
BELPRE — Belpre honored seniors Chase Maze, Nasaih Spencer, Carson Moore and Chris Copen ahead of Friday night’s game against Southern at Joe Garrett Court.
The Golden Eagles led 14-12 after one, but got outscored 14-6 in the second and watched the visiting Tornadoes hold on from there to claim a 48-41 victory.
The triumph allowed Southern to clinch the TVC Hocking championship outright. The Tornadoes are 15-3 overall and 9-0 in league play. Belpre slipped to 8-10 overall and 5-3 in the conference.
Copen led the Golden Eagles with 11 points. Spencer added eight while Malik Currie and AJ Copen chipped in seven apiece.
BHS trailed 26-20 at halftime and 42-32 after three, but were within 44-41 in the final minutes. Southern got the stops it needed and went 4 for 4 at the free-throw line down the stretch to secure the victory.
Andre Chandler led the Tornadoes with a game-high 18 points. Landon Everson tallied eight points while Jake Wickline and Kase Nelson netted seven apiece.
Trinity 67, St. Marys 59 (OT)
ST. MARYS — Down three starters due to illness, St. Marys gutted out an impressive performance against visiting Trinity Christian Friday, but ultimately fell 67-59 in overtime.
Preston Lawhon scored a game-high 25 points for the Blue Devils, who shot just 32% (23 for 70) from the floor. Ryan Kent added 14 points, seven assists and three steals, Brody Rice chipped in 10 points and seven dimes and Trent Renner grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds.
SMHS trailed 15-10 after one but rallied to take a 26-24 halftime lead. The Warriors won the third quarter 19-12 to go up 43-38 with one quarter remaining, but St. Marys had it knotted up at 53-all by the end of regulation.
Trinity, which was led by Austin Porta’s 23 points, out-pointed St. Marys 14-6 in OT to prevail. Aiding the Warriors’ cause was Harley Jackson with 13 points, Parker Hopkins with 10, Maddox Mousodis with 8 and Carter Jackson with seven.
Richwood 57, Paden City 34
PADEN CITY – Despite 11 points from both Brandon Neff and Lucas Anderson, Paden City fell at home to Richwood 57-34 on Friday night.
Paden City’s 10-9 after one quarter was short-lived as Richwood outscored the Wildcats 14-7 in the second quarter. Richwood pulled out to a comfortable 43-28 cushion with one quarter to play.
Robert Crowder scored eight of his game-high 18 points in the game-changing second quarter for Richwood. Teammate Chris Neal stepped into the spotlight in the third quarter for eight of his 14 points.
