Moving Forward: Waterford trio win sectional titles

The Waterford wrestling team placed fourth at the Division III sectional tournament at Alexander and watched three of their wrestlers claim individual championships.

Hayden Jones (157), Colten Jones (175) and Cadon Riley (285) all won their weight classes while Kameron Johnson (132) and Trevin Zimmer (150) were runners-up.

Hayden Jones defeated Adena’s Hayden McWhorter 13-2, Colten Jones bested Huntington’s Carson McNeal 4-0 and Riley pinned Nelsonville-York’s Will Odenthal in 3:10.

The Wildcats scored 130.5 points, finishing behind River Valley (200), Nelsonville-York (161) and Huntington (160).

At the Barnesville district, Fort Frye finished eighth as a team with 81 points.

Braxton Ross claimed an individual sectional title for the Cadets, defeating Martins Ferry’s Tayson Palmer 7-2 in the 215-pound championship.

The sectional title by Ross marked the first in school history.

Kaedyn Dyar (190) and Grayson Goodwin (175) placed fourth while Gavin Rauch (132) and Murray Stewart (165) finished fifth.

In Division II, the Warren boys finished fifth as a team with 103 points.

The Warriors were powered by a pair of individual championships from Aden Strahler and Eric Carr. Strahler pinned Sheridan’s Thad Nikodym in 3:19 to win the 175-pound weight class while Carr defeated Marietta’s Eli Vessels 17-1 at 190.

Fellow Warrior Dylan Legleitner was runner-up at 126 while Ryan Grosselin (132) and Reme Fairbanks (138) both placed fourth while Phineas McDole (113), Paul Harshberger (144) and Landyn Summers (285) all came in fifth.

The Tigers finished eighth as a team with 72 points. Along with Vessels’ runner-up finish, Braxton Wells (132) and Jacob Chovan (175) placed third while Zach Carver (165) and Teddy Bauer (285) each were fourth.

In girls action, Warren competed at Gallia Academy and finished runner-up as a team.

The Warriors (141) finished behind only Jackson (156.5). Emma Gorrell (115), Jade Fairbanks (130), Trinidee McKenzie (140) and Alivia Russell (190) all were runners-up while Emma Grosseling (110) and Kendra Hescht (120) placed third.

Isabella Wilson (100) was fourth, Megan Brothers (170) was fifth and Gretchen Deal (125) was sixth.

Marietta, which finished 10th with 41 points, was led by Irene Belin’s runner-up finish at 135.

Emma Murphy (190) was third, Kileah Lieras-Kelley (130) was fourth and Adel Belin (155) was sixth.
