Roundup: Doddridge wins Danny McConnell Hoops Classic title
WEST UNION — Doddridge County defended home court Tuesday, defeating Liberty 61-50 to win the Danny McConnell Hoops Classic championship.
The Bulldogs (3-0) saw three players score in double figures led by Jerod Trent’s 17. Landon Thomas added 14 and Jaden Solomon netted 11 for DCHS, which visits Webster County Friday.
Baustin Bowers paced Liberty with 15 points.
South Harrison outlasted Wirt County, 40-34, in the consolation game Tuesday.
Rick Fenstermacher led all scorers with 12 points to anchor the Hawks’ attack.
For the Tigers, Tyler Smith and Braylan Dawson scored 10 points apiece.
Ritchie County 61, St. Marys 30
ELLENBORO — Isaac Hodges double-doubled to lead Ritchie County past St. Marys, 61-30, in the Rebels’ season-opener Tuesday.
St. Marys dropped to 0-4 and heads to Williamstown Thursday while Ritchie visits Wirt County Friday.
Hodges finished with 24 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks. Teammate Rhett Johnson added 14 points, seven assists and six steals while Seth Cronin and Garrett Flesher chipped in seven points apiece for the Rebels.
SMHS was paced by Ryan Kent’s 11 points.
Southern 50, Waterford 43
WATERFORD — Waterford led visiting Southern 37-31 going into the fourth quarter Tuesday at Harry Cooper Annex, but the Tornadoes outscored the Wildcats 19-6 over the final eight minutes to escape with a 50-43 victory.
Andre Chandler led all scorers with 21 points while fellow Tornado Landon Everson netted 10 points. Southern improved to 4-1 on the year and 3-0 in the TVC Hocking.
The Wildcats, who slipped to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in league play, received 11 points each from Cole Sparling-Ponchak and Finn Pennock. Tyson Franchino added eight and Max Roberts tallied seven. WHS went just 2 for 15 at the free-throw line in the game.
Waterford, which led 16-12 after a quarter and 23-18 at halftime, will try to rebound Friday against Wellston at home.
Belpre 65, Trimble 61
BELPRE — Another TVC Hocking showdown saw Belpre outlast Trimble 65-61 Tuesday night.
Behind a balanced offensive attack that saw five Golden Eagles score in double figures, BHS improved to 4-0 on the year.
The Tomcats, who slipped to 0-5, got a game-high 26 points from Brady Jajczyk plus 14 from Mason Coffman and nine from Hunter Brandeberry.
Belpre, which heads to Meigs friday, was led by AJ Copen’s 14 points. Copen knocked down four 3-pointers in the contest.
Malik Currie added 13, Chris Copen tallied 12, Nasiah Spencer netted 11 and Carson Moore produced 10.
The Golden Eagles led 13-9 after one, 30-28 at halftime and 49-46 going into the fourth.
Frontier 67, Beallsville 25
BEALLSVILLE — Frontier jumped out to a 26-3 first-quarter lead over host Beallsville and never looked back, coasting to a 67-25 triumph Tuesday.
Avery Powell scored a game-high 22 points for the Cougars, who improved to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the OVAC. Kason Hoff (11 points) and true King (10 points) joined Powell in double figures.
Frontier plays host to Valley Thursday.
The Blue Devils were paced by Gabe Eing’s 11 points.
Magnolia 60, Valley 49
PINE GROVE — Magnolia rallied from a 31-27 halftime deficit to win 60-49 over host Valley Tuesday night.
The Blue Eagles outscored the Lumberjacks 33-18 in the second half to pull ahead.
Kingston Christen poured in a game-high 31 points to lead Magnolia. Noah Hood added 10 points for the winners.
Valley got 20 points from Trevor Stackpole and 19 from Gavin Derby.
