PARKERSBURG — Six different players scored their first goal of the season here Tuesday on senior night inside Erickson All-Sports Facility for host Parkersburg South as the Patriots capped their regular season with an 11-1 mercy rule victory versus John Marshall.

PSHS head coach Ron Bucholtz’ program, which was coming off a 2-0 setback on Saturday at Bridgeport, finished the regular season at 14-1-4 with Winfield set to invade next Tuesday in the sectional opener.

John Marshall, which dropped to 5-12 for head coach Jesus Marin, trailed 9-1 at intermission as Patriot seniors Regan Shockey, Farrah Yost, Kallie McCutcheon, Caiden Watson, Livy Henderson, Addy White, Jozy Barton and Adi Altizer were honored.

Altizer, who turned in a hat trick in the first half, finished with a quartet of goals and a trio of assists.

The Monarchs found themselves trailing 2-0 just 93 ticks into the affair when White and McCutcheon scored their first goals of the season just 31 seconds apart. Henderson played a corner kick out to White, who drilled one from outside the box past JM keeper Caylee Deem. Altizer then assisted on McCutcheon’s goal and the rout was on.

Barton’s assist to Altizer made it 3-0 in the 12th minute and Altizer had an unassisted tally in the 15th minute when she carried the ball down the field and scored.

Deem, who had seven saves, managed to block a shot from Yost in the 18th minute, but Altizer was there for the rebound and the hat trick.

No sooner than it was 5-0, the Patriots struck again just 18 seconds later when Altizer assisted on Watson’s first goal for a 6-0 bulge.

Freshman Berkley Elschlager got in on the action as a first-time goalscorer when she found the back of the net in the 22nd minute via an Altizer assist.

Amiya Powell, who made it 10-1 in the 52nd minute when she scored her first goal, helped the Patriots to an 8-0 advantage in the 24th minute when she assisted on Altizer’s final tally.

John Marshall trailed 9-0 in the 29th minute after Elschlager assisted on Camryn McLain’s first goal of the season, but the Monarchs finally dented the scoreboard when a South turnover led to an unassisted goal by McKeena Schlared with three minutes left in the half.

“She slipped in the mud,” coach Bucholtz said of keeper Mack Moles on her save attempt. “I got to give that girl credit. It was a good shot. I wish our girls wouldn’t have let her walk through two of them in the middle of the field to get open for the shot, but she did hit a beautiful shot.

“It would’ve been interesting to see what would’ve happened had Mack not lost her footing in the mud, but it was an ugly slip. Overall, pleased with the performance and we got a chance to get some of the younger players more game experience, and they did a nice job passing around and moving the ball around.”

Moles finished with a trio of saves, all of which came off the foot of Monarch Zoe Zervous in the shortened second half.

“Senior night and we knew we’d probably have John Marshall overmatched significantly, but you still have to show up and play,” admitted Bucholtz, whose team ended the match in the 53rd minute when Barton found the back of the net via Altizer. “Caiden Watson never scored a goal in her career and Kallie hadn’t scored all season, and neither had Addy.

“Addy scored in corner kicks for us before, but it’s hard to score out of the center back. It was off the corner kick and a beautiful goal. I’m glad Kallie finally got one and Caiden got one, too. That kind of took the pressure off.”

Parkersburg South was supposed to have a match with Buckhannon-Upshur on Thursday, but it was canceled.

Next Tuesday’s match is currently scheduled for a 6 p.m. start back inside the EASF, but if the Patriot boys defeat Winfield on Thursday the match will be moved to 7:30 p.m. because the boys will earn a home sectional opener.

Morgantown girls 3, Parkersburg 1

PARKERSBURG — Audriana Medina cashed in on a penalty kick in the 77th minute Tuesday, but it wasn’t enough as host Parkersburg fell to Morgantown 3-1.

In a battle between two of the state’s top teams, the Mohigans came away victorious thanks in part to Ariana Borneo’s two goals and Ella Miller’s one goal.

Morgantown (12-1-2) took 12 shots on goal with Kaleigh Rexroad saving nine of them for the Big Reds (14-4-2). PHS, which opens sectional play next Tuesday at home against Hurricane, took three shots on goal.
