VINCENT — Chase Lupardus had a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double here Tuesday evening for Warren, but it wasn’t nearly enough as visiting Linsly won its season opener by holding off the Warriors, 61-46.

Warren, which dropped to 3-2 and doesn’t return to action until next Tuesday at New Lexington, played the affair without big man Trent Taylor and trailed 33-20 at halftime.

A productive third quarter allowed head coach Blane Maddox’s squad to close within 10 at 47-37 entering the final eight minutes.

Despite the Cadets missing on their first eight field goal attempts of the fourth, the closest the Warriors got was at 52-46 following a Julian Stadelman 3 from a Jacob Sealey assist with 3:48 remaining. Linsly, which plays next Saturday at Harrison Central, scored the final nine points with Gavin Jackson tossing in eight of his game-high 25 markers to close things out.

“Trent probably won’t be back for a while. We’re going to roll without him and keep going,” admitted Maddox, who also received 11 points from Hayden Wells, six from Stadelman and five from Connor Barry. “We battled hard and then we didn’t get a couple scores, a couple big turnovers and they just went and got the ball and scored. It was hard to stop their runs.

“I thought we out played them in the third quarter and I was happy about that, but we just couldn’t sustain that long enough. The message is just for us to keep getting better. Working to get better, taking care of the basketball and improve our physical strength. They were strong. We’re playing men out there. We got to get stronger.”

Jackson added a game-high six steals and Will Taylor dished out a game-high seven assists and grabbed seven caroms. Carter Anderson pitched in 18 points for the Cadets, who also received nine markers and seven boards from Nate Coleman.

Warren never led, but did have the game even at two following a deuce by Wells.

Linsly led 16-10 late in the first before Ayden Cornell’s lay-in closed it to four. Cornell paced the hosts with six assists.

A Nick Cressey steal and coast-to-coast lay-in kept the deficit at four, 18-14, early in the second, but Linsly was able to push ahead by a baker’s dozen at the break. The Cadets actually scored nine straight after the layup, which included a baseline jam by Gabe Arias Ahumada.

Linsly finished with a 36-26 advantage in rebounds. Warren, which shot 54.3% (19 of 35), was its own worst enemy in the first half with 15 turnovers, but made just six after intermission.
