Battle on the mat: Patriots defeat Cabell Midland, fall to University
PARKERSBURG — No. 2 University left Wednesday night’s triangular inside Rod Oldham Athletic Center with a pair of victories against No. 6 Parkersburg South (42-28) and No. 8 Cabell Midland (57-6) while the seven-time defending Class AAA Patriots also upended the Knights, 58-17.
PSHS mat boss Shaun Smith received 2-0 efforts from six different wrestlers and that included a pair of mat slappers from 152-pounder Jude Childers and 170-pounder Gage Wright, who won the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference title over the weekend.
Also going 2-0 for the hosts were Brent Bosley at 120, Ryan Martin at 132, Trent Jones at 138 and 182-pounder Aydan Edwards, who used a takedown with a little more than a second left to double up University’s Hezekiah Taylor, 4-2, while also securing a reverse with 15 ticks remaining to earn a 10-9 decision versus Knight Nick Giompalo. Edwards entered the fray ranked second by wvmat.com while Giompalo was third and Taylor sixth.
“He took a couple upsets this weekend and lost some matches he shouldn’t have. It was good the way he rebounded back,” coach Smith said of Edwards.
“Those were two tough kids. That was a good thing to see, but I’d like to see a little more urgency during the match where it’s not always down to right at the end.”
Wright’s pin of Elijah Wellings-Osha in three minutes gave the Patriots a 25-24 edge versus UHS, but the Hawks got mat slappers from Brock Kehler (195), Colin McBee (220) and heavyweight Corbin Turney to secure the 14-point victory.
That trio along with Brodie Emery (106), Dane Wolfe (113), freshman OVAC champ Luca Felix (145) and Dakota Hagedorn (160) each went 2-0.
“I thought for the most part kids wrestled pretty hard,” added coach Smith, whose squad returns to action at 10 a.m. Saturday for the Frank Ferguson Memorial Brooke Classic. “A little disappointing giving up pins the way we did on a few of those. That’s something we kind of stressed with them prior to the match, but sometimes it’s not always that easy.
“That’s the main thing, but I did see some good things. We didn’t even get to practice this week. Just kind of going off the weekend, we’ve got to clean some things up. We’re a young team, but at some point that excuse isn’t going to work anymore.”
Prior to the match, Edwards and Wright were honored with “Quick Pin” awards. Edwards had a mat slapper in seven seconds at the OVAC and Wright had one in three seconds.
“It was pretty amazing,” Smith said of Wright’s feat. “I think it was an all-time record for the OVAC and it tied a national record because I don’t think you can get one faster than three seconds.”
Parkersburg South had 1-1 efforts from Mackiah Claudio (113), Noah Dulaney (126), Kyle Wheeler (145), Robert Shockey (160) and 195-pounder Ayden Morris.
“We just got to wrestle better and that’s the main thing,” Smith stressed. “Wrestle better and wrestle through positions and not give up and get those pins and bonus points when we can get them.”
