PHS defeats South
Shedd first win as Big Reds coach
PARKERSBURG — Tristan Brogan tallied a hat trick here Saturday afternoon for host Parkersburg and the Big Reds gave new head man Billy Shedd his first coaching victory after upending rival Parkersburg South, 8-0.
Brogan’s first goal came in the fourth minute via a header on Caden Rogers’ corner kick and he followed that up in the seventh minute with another goal thanks to an assist from Terrance Wright.
The Big Reds were able to hold a 3-0 advantage at the break when the Patriots of head coach Jamie Whitlatch couldn’t clear a ball following a corner by Wright.
That led to a left-footed bender from Rogers, which beat keeper Garrett Lewis.
“It’s always a good day to win,” admitted coach Shedd, who got a clean sheet in the first half from Caleb Thomas while freshman Aiden Merritt made two second-half saves on boots by Patriots Tobi Adebulu and Zach Scott.
“We’re trying to work on some things. It looks like we are going to be on for next week. I’m so excited. Hopefully, we can get this season in.”
Thanks to an assist from Grant Miller, Brogan managed to secure his hat trick just 2:47 into the second half.
Not quite five minutes later, Kota Butcher assisted on Wright’s goal as the Patriots fell behind 5-0.
“We don’t have enough to scrimmage each other so it’s hard to fix it until you get into the game,” Whitlatch noted.
“We adjusted at halftime and we came out better.
“They have heart. They have dedication. Those kids won’t quit ever and I got to commend them for that.”
Parkersburg South found itself trailing 6-0 in the 57th minute when Landon Shedd dropped a short pass to Butcher, who found the back of the net.
Butcher then scored an unassisted goal with 19:48 to play after a shot by Shedd was blocked by a Patriot defender, but wasn’t cleared out of the box.
Following a short water break, Big Red Logan Henthorn scored 21 ticks later after he launched a shot from the left sideline and put it into the upper 90 on the far side.
Parkersburg South wasn’t able to muster much offensively during the match.
A Nick Murphy through ball down the sideline to Miciah Jones went just long in the 11th minute. In the 40th minute, Adebulu played a ball deep into the red and white box, but Miller was able to use a soft header to get it back to Thomas and out of harm’s way.
In the second half, Evan Rose made a run and sent a pass to Murphy, but JT Ohler was there to thwart it for the hosts. In the 52nd minute, Gage Piggott had a corner kick for South, but it was cleared by Sahand Saadevandi.
The 1-1 Big Reds will return to action at 6 p.m. Thursday at Ripley.
Parkersburg South (0-2) is scheduled to have its home opener at 6 p.m. on Tuesday against Point Pleasant.
