Marietta Post 64 falls to Elkins Post 29
MARIETTA — Marietta Post 64 hit a bump in the road at home.
The Marietta American Legion baseball team had a 6-game winning streak snapped when it dropped a 12-3 decision to Elkins Post 29 Sunday afternoon at Legion Field at the Fairgrounds.
“We had a good run in West Virginia at the Hillbilly Classic, winning five games,” said Post 64 skipper Larry Hiser.
“We hit, pitched and played defense well. But we didn’t do any of that today.”
Marietta fell to 9-5 on the season while Ekins improved its record to 8-9.
Post 29 was coming off a doubleheader setback to Parkersburg Post 15 Saturday at Bennett Stump Field in City Park.
Marietta is scheduled to host Post 15 in a single game at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Hiser said that either Corbin Alkire, Derek Duckworth, or Jarrett Jackson will get the pitching nod.
Elkins led 1-0 in the first and 3-2 in the third before cruising home with the victory in the later innings.
Right-hander Will Knight pitched a 7-inning complete game for the winners, striking out eight, walking three, and allowing five hits. He also helped his own cause, going 2 for 2 with a double. Zack Colebank paced Post 29 with three hits and two runs-batted-in. Remington Stanley also drove in two runs with two hits, while Dustin Primavero scored three runs and had two singles.
Elkins finished with 13 hits in the contest.
“Elkins is a pretty good team,” Hiser said. “They swing the bats pretty good.”
Mike Reeder, Foster Brand, Jake Rose, and Mark Martie all pitched for Marietta Post 64, which briefly led at the end of two, 2-1. The four Post 64 hurlers combined to walk 13 Elkins batters.
Reed, who started on the hill, was chased in the top of the third.
Offensively, Alkire had Post 64’s big hit, a run-scoring double.
Elkins Post 29 is slated to play Braxton County Post 33 at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Philip Barbour High in Philippi.
