Bulldogs track teams sweep Gazette Relays

CHARLESTON — Doddridge County had quite the effort on Friday and Saturday as the Bulldog track teams swept the Class A portion of the Gazette-Mail Relays at the University of Charleston’s Laidley Field.

Jonna Ferrell, who won the 100 (12.72), 200 (26.72) and 400 (1:02.68), finished as the single-A girls high-point scorer (32). Not to be outdone, fellow Bulldog Carter Lipscomb amassed 32.5 points en route to top honors. Lipscomb was victorious in the 800 (2:07.37), 1600 (4:40.31) and the 3200 (9:58.71). He also ran a leg on the Bulldogs’ first-place 4×400 team (3:47.38) with Gage Smith, Hunter Jenkins and James Kuhn.

Griffin Devericks was a double winner for DCHS thanks to sweeping the hurdles. He went 15.94 to win the 110 highs and 41.69 to capture the 300 hurdles.

The Bulldogs also had the top shuttles team and finished with a clocking of 1:02.18 thanks to Devericks, Dawson Evans, Reese Burnside and Connor Cunningham. The DCHS quartet of William Atkinson, James Kuhn, Trent Gola and Josh Swann also had a winning effort of 9:21.4 in the 4×800.

Burnside cleared 13 feet to win the pole vault, while Smith was runner-up in the 800 and 3200 and placed third in the 1600. Evans was runner-up in the 110 hurdles and Gola took third in the 3200.

Doddridge County also got a runner-up effort in the high jump from Connor Cunningham.

The only other area single-A thinclad to win an event was Gilmer County’s Chase Steele, who topped the field in the long jump (20-5.75), and also placed third in the 200. Titan teammate Johntae Lipscomb was third in the 800 and fourth in the 1600.

The Bulldog girls of head man Craig Kellar also received gold in the pole vault from Cameron Smith, who cleared 8 feet, 6 inches before teammate and runner-up Jasmine Ball (third in the 100 hurdles) did. Bulldog Rylee Spurlock was third and Calhoun County’s Ann Pingley placed fourth.

Doddridge County’s girls also had the quickest 4×400 (4:29.31) squad with Faith Galager, Smith, Courtney Sanford and Jordan Vidal, who took third in the high jump, just ahead of Calhoun County’s Ella Hess (fourth) and Megan Harding (fifth). Galager also had a third-place showing in the long jump.

Gilmer County’s Lindsay Chapman was the fastest Class A 800 runner as the Titan bested the field with a clocking of 2:33.25. Chapman also was third in the 1600. Fellow Titan Hannah Grove was runner-up in the 200 and third in the 100.

Calhoun County’s track team also had a runner-up effort from Kayla Ware (31-8) in the shot put and she placed third in the discus.

In Class AA, Roane County’s Jordan Coon had quite the meet as the Raider won four events and earned high-point honors (40). The Raider was victorious in the 100 (11.08), 200 (22.42), 300 hurdles (40.41) and the long jump (20-4.75). Roane County teammate Cael McCutcheon was third in the pole vault.

The Raider girls also had some success. Kim Waggoner claimed first in the shot put with a heave of 34 feet, 5 inches. Teammate Olivia Patterson was fourth in the discus. RCHS also received points from Savannah Unger (third in high jump, fourth in 200) and Marissa Landis, who was sixth in the pole vault.

Parkersburg’s girls had a win in the triple-A shuttles event. The Big Reds posted a top time of 1:01.23 thanks to Holly Chapman, Kendall Domenick, Emily Kupfner and Delaney Cox. Big Red Jaden Garner was sixth in the shot put.
