PHS Sports HOF to induct three on Thursday

PARKERSBURG — The Parkersburg High School Sports Hall of Fame will be hosting a banquet honoring the class of 2019 at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Blennerhassett Hotel.

The class of 2019 will be Joe Handlan, Jr, Carl Harnish and Kathy Goldstein.

A partner in education with Parkersburg High, it was a no brainer having the banquet at the hotel, according to former longtime Big Red athletic director and current Mountain State Athletic Conference Commissioner Jim Hamric.

“It is a really classy place and they are making it really nice for us to have it there,” Hamric said.

Induction ceremonies commence the following evening between the Parkersburg High boys’ basketball junior varsity and varsity games inside the PHS Memorial Fieldhouse.

Brought back after a 10-year hiatus in 2018, the PHS hall of fame now stands at 20 inductees with the induction.

Handlan was a 1962 graduate and state champion from PHS, winning six team titles and coaching 52 individual state champions in wrestling from 1976 to 2000.

Harnish was the volleyball coach from 1983 to 2015. His teams qualified for the state tournament 30 out of 34 years, including 10 state championships.

Goldstein was the first female all-state honoree in track, leading PHS to the school’s first track team championship in 1976. Goldstein earned state records in the 100- and 220-yard dashes,

“We are starting to make a dent in the talent-rich people that went through PHS as a player, coach or administrative role,” Hamric said. “But there is still a long way to go.”

Tickets are currently on sale at $50. Contact the athletic director office at PHS during normal business hours or Hamric at 304-483-2727.

“It’s a great Big Red event, it promotes a lot of pride in the school and community,” Hamric said. “We hope those that really love the school will try to make it.”
